Music for Twitch Streams: DMCA-Safe Options
Music is one of the fastest ways to set the mood on a Twitch stream, but it is also one of the fastest ways to get a VOD muted or a DMCA strike. The safest approach is to use music that is explicitly cleared for live streaming.
Why DMCA Strikes Happen
Twitch uses audio recognition to scan VODs and clips. If the system detects copyrighted music, the rights holder can:
- Mute the offending portion of the VOD
- Issue a DMCA takedown
- In repeat cases, suspend the channel
What Counts as DMCA-Safe
Truly safe music meets three criteria:
- The distributor owns or fully licenses every sound in the track.
- The license explicitly covers live streaming and archived VODs.
- The track is not registered with Content ID systems.
